Martin Hewitt, leader of the successful Olympian Homes sponsored Adaptive Grand Slam expedition to the summit of Mount Everest, has returned home safely with his team to the UK.
This was an extraordinary feat of strength and endurance for him and his fellow former servicemen, each of them with life-changing injuries.
Their chief guide and weather-watcher was Russell Brice, who held the same position in 2012, when a team of veterans, including Martin and Olympian Homes’ Chairman, Mark Slatter, attempted the same expedition but had to turn back because of dangerous weather conditions.
Of the expedition, Martin said he was “hugely grateful to Olympian Homes, without whose financial support the accomplishment would not have been possible”. The adventure also included successful ascents of Pumori by all team members. Translated as ‘The Mountain’s Daughter’, Pumori lies just eight kilometres to the west of Everest and is accessed by climbers from the Everest base camp. In this case it made for a useful mission to acclimatise in preparation for the Everest ascent.
